Chelsea linked with 21-goal English star but could face competition from London rivals

According to reports in the national media (h/t football.london), Chelsea have joined Premier League rivals, Arsenal, in ‘paying close attention to’ Everton star, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Thomas Tuchel has asked the Chelsea board to look at alternatives for Erling Haaland as a deal to land the Norwegian could be tough. The German is ‘frustrated’ at the club’s pace in Haaland negotiations and wants to keep his options open. (h/t football.london)

Calvert-Lewin had a memorable season under Carlo Ancelotti at Everton. He netted 21 times in all competitions for them and has certainly caught the eye of England’s elites.

The 24-year-old, unlike Haaland, has experience playing in the Premier League. But Chelsea fans would think that the club already has a young English striker in Tammy Abraham who scored 12 times last season at the rate of a goal every 128 minutes.

Calvert-Lewin right choice for Chelsea?

Nevertheless, the attack is a position that Tuchel should strengthen before next season. The UEFA Champions League-winning Chelsea team did not seem like they were missing too many parts of the puzzle.

But a striker to compete with Timo Werner, whose goal-scoring form was underwhelming last season, could be the boost they need to translate their European success.

Whether it is Calvert-Lewin or Haaland, any incoming would mean Abraham and Olivier Giroud could fall further in the pecking order. The duo, especially Abraham, did not have a lot of starts under the new German manager.
