CHELSEA’S supersubs and VAR spared Thomas Tuchel from an unwelcome piece of history.
Before the arrival of Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz, the German was on the verge of suffering back-to-back Premier League losses for the first time since taking charge in January 2021.
Both players scored as the Blues overcame a goal deficit and another lackluster performance to triumph.
Chilwell opened the scoring in the 76th minute, and Havertz added another with two minutes remaining in regulation to earn three points and relieve Tuchel of the burden following his significant summer shopping binge.
But after West Ham's own substitute Maxwell Cornet scored a leveling goal for the Hammers only for it to be disallowed, VAR had the final say.
Ref Andrew Madley consulted the pitchside monitor before ruling that West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen had fouled Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy in the build up.
