Chelsea appear close to completing the deal to bring Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana after being linked with a move for Harry Maguire

Sky Sports analyst Paul Merson has warned Chelsea that they might have made a mistake by preferring to recruit Wesley Fofana from Leicester City rather than Harry Maguire.

Following their failure to recruit long-term target Jules Kounde, who eventually signed with Barcelona, the Blues reportedly showed interest in Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

Chelsea would eventually decide to pursue Fofana, and it appears that they have already secured their target in terms of football.

According to reports in London, Chelsea made a fourth offer that was guaranteed to be worth £70 million and included additional add-ons that would raise the transfer price above the £80 million Manchester United spent for Harry Maguire in 2019.
Merson, though, is dubious about the Frenchman's signing and has implied that they made a mistake.
"If I were Chelsea, I would have chosen Harry Maguire," Merson continued. Believe me, Harry Maguire in a three is excellent. He has experience playing for England and is a solid three-man defender.
