Edouard Mendy reveals what he thought about Chelsea fans ahead of £22m transfer

Edouard Mendy is loving playing in front of capacity Chelsea crowds for the first time since his move to Stamford Bridge last summer.

Not many goalkeepers will have a better start to life at a new club than Edouard Mendy has had at Chelsea.

The shot-stopper was signed by Frank Lampard in the summer of 2020. By the end of his first campaign, he was a European champion and, under Thomas Tuchel, regarded as one of the world's best goalkeepers.

UEFA crowned him their goalkeeper of the year at the start of this season, too, and the Senegal international is loving his second campaign at Stamford Bridge, even if it is just a few games old.

The 29-year-old has played more games with no fans in the ground than he has with them, but insists that he is revelling in the atmosphere created by his supporters.

Mendy also revealed he would watch Premier League games before his move from Rennes, and pinpointed the 'incredible' atmosphere Chelsea fans would create at Stamford Bridge.

"Last year we didn't play in front of the fans but now with the situation we are lucky, we can play in full stadiums and it is quite an atmosphere at Stamford Bridge," Mendy told the club's official website.

"The fans are incredible and they help me a lot. When I watched the games when I played in France, every time I said to myself – ‘Wow! The atmosphere in England, especially in Chelsea, is incredible’.

"So now I'm lucky because I play with this atmosphere, and this year for the Premier League, for the Champions League and the cups, we need it."

The reigning European champions have made a fast start to the Premier League season, winning three of their opening four matches.

A 3-0 win against Aston Villa was the latest victory, one that came about thanks to two Romelu Lukaku goals.
